THE PRACTICE OF REUSING AND RECYCLING CLOTHING ITEMS DATES BACK THOUSANDS OF YEARS.
Through the ages recycling methods have changed and improved. Today, modern technology and a global trade has made reusing textiles (such as used mixed rags and credential clothing) and recycling textiles (breaking them down to a fibrous form for use in other products) much easier and faster. The reuse and recycling of used clothing creates jobs, keeps our planet cleaner, our landfills less crowded, while at the same time providing clothing to those who need it.
Mixed rags, a category of used clothing, are sold wholesale in large bales. Generally weighing between 800 and 1200 pounds, mixed rags are a common and valuable part of the used clothing industry.
Thrift stores regularly receive more donations than they can sell. Unsold donations of clothing are pulled from the sales floor and baled as used mixed rags, then sent to a warehouse until they can be sold to other markets. Used mixed rags are often shipped overseas in large shipping containers which weigh approximately 20 tons (40,000 pounds!) each.
Bales of used mixed rags contain men's clothing, women's clothing, and children's clothing items. Since the clothing came from a resale (thrift store) environment, it is common to find thrift store price tags still attached to clothing items.
